Structura Open Windows #2: Jane Garbert
28.06.2022 - 28.07.2022
A project by STRUCTURA Gallery and Goethe-Institut Bulgaria
Jane Garbert is the second artist that STRUCTURA Gallery welcomes within the framework of the “STRUCTURA Open Windows” project, realised in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Bulgaria and in partnership with the independent project space ROAM Berlin. “STRUCTURA Open Windows” aims to reduce the distance between people and art, by detaching them from the hurry of everyday life and offering them exhibitions directly on the windows of the Structura Gallery.
Inspired by the everyday, insignificant elements of our urban environment, Jane Garbert is interested in taking them out of their trivial context and creating a different narrative for them, uncovering new chains of associations.
During the fortnight residency at STRUCTURA Gallery, Garbert actualises a project she named “Closed Society” (Geschlossene Gesellschaft). In it, she reverses the meaning of the barrier tape and transforms it into a symbol of safety. In order to emphasise the altered symbolism, Jane Garbert uses the ethereality of the material, detached from the severity we associate with barrier tape. The origami-like motif is made by meticulous painting on individual pieces of plexiglass. When connected, they unite in an open circle, creating the “safe space” of a “Closed Society”.
