Maria Hahnenkamp was born in Eisenstadt, Austria, and lives in Vienna. Hahnenkamp has held workshops at the School for Artistic Photography Friedl Kubelkain Vienna from 2001 to 2002 and was guest professor at the University of Art and Design in Linz in 2004/2005. During her career, Hahnenkamp has received numerous prizes and awards, including the “Award of the City of Vienna for Fine Arts” (2008), the “Austrian Award of Recognition for Artistic Photography”(2007), the “Outstanding Artist Award for Art of the City of Vienna” (1999), the “Römerquelle Editorial Award” (1998), the “Otto Mauer Fund’s Prize” (1995) and the “Outstanding Artist Award for Art Photography from the Federal Ministry for Education, the Arts and Culture” (1994).

Solo exhibitions include presentations at Camera Austria, Graz (2019); a retrospective at Photo Gallery Vienna (2016); Krobath Vienna (2012); Salzburger Kunstverein (2008); Praz-Delavallade Gallery, Paris (2005, 2001, 1998, 1996); Fotohof Salzburg (1996). Group participations include: Dom Museum Vienna (2017); “Desiring the Real,” Shanghai Urban Exhibition Center and Hong Kong University Museum, “Psychoanalysis – Gazes on Photography and Video Art from Austria”, Tokyo Wonder Site, Tokyo und Kumamoto, Japan (2010); “The Power of Ornament”, Belvedere, Vienna, (2009);
